How to change the language on Whatsapp

WhatsApp, the 2 billion instant messenger is available in over 40 languages and up to 60 on Android. As a general rule, WhatsApp follows the language of your phone. For example, if you change the language of your phone to Spanish, WhatsApp will automatically be in Spanish.

Change your phone’s language

  1. Android: Go to your phone’s Settings > System > Languages & input > Languages. Tap and hold a language to position it at the top, or tap Add a language .
  2. iPhone: Go to iPhone Settings  > General > Language & Region > iPhone Language. Select a language, then tap Change to {language}.
  3. KaiOS: Press Settings on the apps menu > scroll to the side to select Personalization > scroll down and press Language > press Language > select the language you want to use > press OK or SELECT.

Option available in supported countries

If you’re using an Android phone, you might have the option to change WhatsApp’s language from within the app. To do so:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options  > Settings > Chats  > App Language.
  3. In the popup that appears, select the language you want.

If you don’t see this option, it might not be supported in your country.

About inactive account deletion

To maintain security, limit data retention, and protect the privacy of our users, WhatsApp accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity. Inactivity means the user hasn’t connected to WhatsApp.

An internet connection is required for an account to be active. If a user has WhatsApp open on their device, but they don’t have an internet connection, then the account will be inactive.

Content stored locally on a user’s device prior to account deletion will remain until WhatsApp is deleted from the device. When a user reregisters for WhatsApp on the same device, their locally stored content will reappear.
