MIcrosoft Edge Windows 7 End Of Support

Microsoft announced the end of life for the older Windows 7 OS in an attempt to focus more on newer products.

It was earlier known that Microsoft will continue offering software updates for the Edge browser on Windows 7 through 2021. According to an updated support page, Microsoft has said it will support Edge Chromium for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 only until July 15, 2021.

This means users have little more than a year left to keep using the browser. Of course, there is always the option of upgrading to Windows 10. If not, there are a variety of Windows 7 alternatives in the market as well.

Other than that, Remond notes that the Internet Explorer compatibility mode present in Edge Chromium will only work if a user has subscribed to Windows 7 Extended Security Updates. It’s a paid program available for organizations that can’t upgrade their systems, mostly due to software compatibility issues.

In addition to Windows 10, the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge is also compatible with Windows 7, 8.1, macOS, etc. A version for the browser for Linux distros is also in the works.

Edge Chromium is Microsoft’s latest attempt aimed at regaining the browser market dominance it once had with Internet Explorer more than a decade ago. It seems the company is getting quite successful with its efforts.
