Watch GT 2 Pro to be the first smartwatch to equip Hongmeng OS, as it’s set for launch

Huawei unveiled its latest smartwatch, Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro featuring a new titanium design and Qi wireless charging at the HDC 2020. The watch will be available in Europe starting September 2020.

The European version of this watch will come pre-equipped with LiteOS. On the other hand, Huawei seems to have a different operating system for this watch in its home market.

After the HDC 2020, Zhang Wei, President of Huawei’s Smart Wear and Sport Product Division, gave an interview to Chinese media. He said the recently launched Watch GT 2 Pro will be the first smartwatch to equip Hongmeng OS and will be released soon in China.

At HDC 2020, Huawei launched HarmonyOS 2.0 AKA Hongmeng OS 2.0. With this new version, Huawei added new platform support including wearables, in-car systems, tablets, and even smartphones.

A previous report on this matter suggests that Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro will support third-party applications but it may be different than usual. Instead of downloading them directly from AppGallery, users will have to connect the watch to a smartphone to use its increased processing power.

Then, the watch’s display can be used as a second screen to mirror the content from the smartphone. This new feature is currently being tested by Huawei and it may come with Watch GT 2 Pro, when it will launch with HarmonyOS.

Currently, Huawei has not confirmed an official launch date of Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro in China but we’ll likely hear it before or alongside Huawei Mate 40 series.
