Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to apply. We currently offer Fellowships in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, India, the United States and Canada

North America and Europe

In the United States, Canada, and Europe, PhD students must be nominated by their university. Any accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students may submit nominations by an official representative of the university.

The Google North America and Europe PhD Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Applications for the 2021 program will open on November 1st, 2020 and will close on November 30, 2020 at 11:59:59 PM PST. Awardees will be notified by March 2021.

Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia

In Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia, PhD students must be nominated by an eligible university. Nomination instructions are sent to eligible universities and submissions must be provided directly by an official representative of the university.

The Google Australia, New Zealand, and East Asia PhD Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Invitations for the 2020 program will be delivered in March 2020. And the application window will close on May 31, 2020 at 11:59:59 PM CST. Awardees will be notified by July 2020.

Africa and India

In India and Africa, students may apply directly during the application period, which opens each February in India and each November in Africa. Applications are open to students in Computer Science and related fields from any Indian or African university.

The Google India PhD Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Applications for the 2020 program will open in February 2020 and will close on April 20, 2020 at 11:59:59 PM IST. Awardees will be notified by July 2020.

The Google Africa PhD Fellowship program application window is closed for this year. Applications for the 2020 program will open in November 2019 and will close on February 5, 2020 11:59:59 PM GMT. Awardees will be notified by April 2020.
